Anne's Trip Log for this Segment of the Trip

Friday, July 8 – Saturday, July 9

Off to Cornwall and St. Ives! A long drive, but through such pretty areas. We made two stops on the way; one at a Cornwall museum and then at Tintagel which at least according to the promoters was perhaps the birthplace of King Arthur. History or myth it makes a good story and the area of the ancient castle and the views are spectacular.

On to St. Ives and a visit with Jazz Hawkins – a living Harding side relative – and Peter Fewson. Jazz grew up in South Africa so no family sites to visit but great discussions, great hospitality. Hope that the garden is doing very well! St. Ives knows that it is a beautiful location, but it is a beautiful location. Maneuvering a car and parking in St. Ives is another subject altogether – make sure that your standard shift car has a hand brake.

Notice that we actually have two dates in one section here! Saturday was really our only play day of the whole trip. After a good breakfast with Jazz and Peter we walked to Porthmeor Beach and spent some time on the sand and in the water. Carol and Anne swam in both sides of the Atlantic in one summer!

Then walking through town, eating Cornish Pasties and Ice Cream, being very protective of our food against the thieving, feisty sea gulls. We had been warned and we heeded the warning. We saw one man lose his food. Anne did ask at one point if either Carol or Jeff would be willing to sacrifice their food for a picture of a sea gull attack, but no takers. [note from Jeff -- Anne didn't volunteer to give up HER ice cream, either!]

Sunday, July 10

Another good breakfast with Jazz and Peter; final packing; pictures in the garden; help from a neighbor getting the car extricated from its spot; good-byes then off to Southampton.

We did a stop at Falmouth with its sheltered harbor and castles on the spits on each side. At Southampton we had some trouble finding our accommodations but finally located it. The family had adapted a cottage behind a 450 year old manor house to accommodate lodgers. The other couple was from the Lichfield area but visits family at Stratford-upon-Avon and had visited Sweet Knowle Aquatics.
