Anne's Trip Log for this Segment of the Trip

Sunday, July 17

Lots of passengers were on deck to watch our approach to New York harbor. It was quite foggy but we were finally able to see the lights of Verrazano Narrows bridge and then the bridge itself. QM2’s stack is shorter than would be expected for this length of ship, to be able to go under the bridge! It only clears the bridge by 10’. Similarly, we were able to see the Statue of Liberty emerge out of the haze. Seeing the QM2 docking is another reminder of how big she is.

Disembarking went very smoothly. We carried our own luggage so got off with the first group and were met on the dock by Anne’s sister Jane. So ended an amazing trip; thank you, James, for giving us the excuse even if you did ditch out on us.

(Explanation: James was supposed to be on the CGC Chase in the Pacific for 5 weeks, then on the CGC Eagle in Europe for 5 weeks. That’s why we made these plans. Then while on the Chase, his orders were changed and he stayed aboard her the entire 10 weeks)

We spent as much time as we could in New York with Jane, Malcolm and Matthew. Matthew left for work, then Jane and Malc took Anne and Jeff on a long walk along the Manhattan water front, past Stuyvesant High School where nephew Scott goes and Matthew just graduated; on over to Ground Zero … then the subway back to the apartment where Carol was sleeping.

We got to Newark airport in good time only to find our plane delayed which meant several phone calls to Sarah as she needed to pick us up from our flight. We had thought that James was coming in just a bit later than us but Sarah said that his travel plans had been changed. Good flight home; walking to the luggage area; there is Sar as expected and then Anne screams – there is James also! We had been so occupied with what was happening with our flight that we assumed James was going to be a day or two later!! They got us even though Sar apparently slipped on the phone at one point so we could have realized that he was home already!

Well, a lot of writing. Hope that you found some parts of it interesting
