Carol goes to Thailand!

Gallery 1:  Pre-Trip Preparation

There was a lot of training involved for Carol, Anne, and I to get us prepared for this year. We learned some new terminology -- Carol is an Outbound. The students from Thailand (and other countries) visiting here are Inbounds. When Carol returns, she'll be a Rebound. And a Rebound who then goes on another exchange the following year is a Yo-Yo.

There were a number of trainings at the local and district level, building up to a weekend long Central States Conference in July at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. This is where we really got a lot of good specific information about Thailand, some of the customs, and what Carol can expect. She spoke with the Canadian student who stayed with her first host family this year, and has spoken to her host mom already.

She will stay with 3 different host families this year, but will go to the same school for the entire year. The early months will be spent learning the language. Once she's done that, she can participate more fully in school.

While she's there, she'll also go on 3 bus tours arranged by the Rotary and get to see a great deal of the country. She'll be able to attend at temple to experience that part of their culture. And she'll likely do some additional traveling around the country. Her focus is to learn as much as she can about Thai culture.

She'll attend at least one meeting a month at the host Rotary club in Khon Kaen, which is in the northeastern part of the country. And as mentioned above, she'll send monthly reports back to the Rotary district here.
